Boss Plumbing started in 2014 when owner Steve Hall made the life-changing decision to chase the dream he had carried for years. After building a successful career as a plumber and foreman, Steve found himself constantly working on out-of-town projects, away from his growing family. When he was offered the opportunity to start a new division for a company he deeply respected, it seemed like the next logical step. But as he mapped out the plan for their success, he realized he was putting all his energy into someone else’s vision, while his own dream remained untouched. With his wife Richelle expecting their third son, Steve knew it was time. He took the leap, trusted his instincts, and started something that had always been in his heart: Boss Plumbing.
Steve knew he couldn’t build Boss Plumbing alone. His first call was to longtime friend, fellow tradesman and now business partner, Matt Bartake. The two had gone through all four years of trade school together at SIAST, becoming journeyman plumbers and general gas fitters. While Steve’s career gave him deep experience in the commercial and industrial sectors, he knew their new business needed to start small, beginning in the residential market, where Matt’s strengths truly shined.
What made their partnership unique was not just their complementary skills, but the roots they shared. Steve grew up in the trade, influenced by his late grandfather Lorne, a journeyman plumber and pipefitter. Matt came from a family that ran a successful plumbing business in Melville, Saskatchewan. That combination of friendship, shared values, and real-world experience shaped Boss Plumbing’s approach from the very start.
Together, they built a company that never cuts corners and treats every job with care, no matter the size. Their belief is simple: how you do anything is how you do everything. That mindset continues to drive Boss Plumbing forward every day.
Boss Plumbing began in Steve’s garage in Saskatoon, a small space with big ambition. Even in those early days, Boss took on projects across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, quickly earning a reputation for excellence and reliability.
During the pandemic, while still operating from the garage, the company launched the “Boss Shops Local” campaign, giving over $5,000 in gift cards to customers and supporting local businesses at a time when it mattered most. That kind of community-first mindset helped define their identity.
Now in 2025, Boss Plumbing has grown into a full-scale operation at their new commercial location – 10-327 Gladstone Cres in Saskatoon, SK, with a team of nearly 70 and no plans to slow down. What started in a garage is now a leading force in the plumbing, heating, and cooling industry, driven by the same passion, purpose, and pursuit of excellence that sparked it all.
Supporting the community in Saskatoon, who Boss Plumbing calls home has always been at the heart of everything we do. From day one, we have remained committed to giving back, creating an inclusive workplace, and showing appreciation for the city and province that gave us our start. That gratitude continues to guide everything we do.
